Ether (ETH) is among the top three most popular cryptocurrencies in the world. It is the native cryptocurrency of the Ethereum platform, which is a decentralised open source blockchain that uses smart contracts to operate. Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) can be likened to a “world computer” where developers can upload smart contract code that is executed with ether.
Ethereum was initially cofounded by Vitalik Buterin and Gavin Wood and developed through crowdfunding. The platform went live on July 30, 2015.
While it was originally operated on a Proof of Work protocol, it later began its transition to a Proof of Stake protocol in 2020. These upgrades are all a part of Ethereum 2.0.
